TOTAL Lubricants Heroes of Speed race meet at Dover Raceway in St Ann saw the Jamaica Race Drivers Club (JRDC) 2017 season coming to an exciting end on Heroes Day, last Monday.
“It was an excellent meet. The weather impacted our race schedule, but overall we’re happy with the event,” Monique Gibbs, JRDC president, told the Jamaica Observer’s Auto magazine.
Leading the class championships was the top level of local motorsport, Thundersport (TS), with Kyle Gregg taking victory. Before the race he only needed to finish behind David Summerbell Jr across the three races to take top honours. However, Gregg didn’t resist his racing urges and battled all day to seal his class championship with two race wins and a second place.
“It feels great to win, especially for Texaco, as I’m proud to hand them a championship,” he said.
Gregg had the title once he crossed the finish line for the first TS, but continued to push through the light rain and gave his fans the excitement they craved. The major prize, the overall circuit racing championship title, remains undecided as the JRDC is working out a points situation arising from the abandonment of the third Thundersport 2 race at race meet three in JamWest Speedway, Westmoreland.
Gregg, however, is confident that whatever the resolution, he can still claim the 2017 Circuit Racing Championship title. He’s also looking ahead given the current challenge from Summerbell Jr and the expected return of Doug Gore in 2018.
“David’s car has a better power to weight ratio than mine, and Gore is supposed to be coming with big power, so my options are to sell my car and get something competitive,” he explained.
Modified Production class 2 went to 2016 Circuit Racing champion Fraser McConnell, who put on a masterclass defence against his class rival William Myers, starting from pole, to win two of his three races and securing a second-place finish. He and Modified Production class one champion Colin Daley Jr shared the meet champion honours.

The motorcycle class A and B champions are to be determined.
